Ledger Nano S vs Ledger Hw.1 Review 2018 — Are They Any Different?

Ledger Nano S vs Ledger Hw.1 —

Ledger is a France based company that was launched in 2014 by 8 experts, each with extensive knowledge of cryptocurrencies, embedded security and entrepreneurship.

The company has since its inception leveraged a distinctive proprietary technology through an operating system called BOLOS, to develop infrastructural solutions and security for cryptocurrencies and blockchain applications for both companies and individuals alike.

Ledger is apparently the only player in the market providing this kind of technology and has been able to integrate it into creating a state of the art secured chip for their hardware wallet line.

This review seeks to compare two hardware wallets created by Ledger’s unique security protocols – the Ledger Nano S and Ledger HW.1.

In the end, their basic differences will be pointed out living you with an easy choice to make. We will be comparing them through the following categories.

  • Price
  • Screen
  • Supported coins
  • Setup
  • Security
  • Software compatibility

PRICE – LEDGER NANO S VS LEDGER HW.1

The Nano S is currently selling at $94 (N33,778 Naira) while the HW.1 can be bought for $25.99 (N9,360 Naira) on Amazon. The prices above clearly indicate the fact that the HW.1 is far more affordable.

The gulf in prices can be partly attributed to the fact that, the Nano S is an upgrade of the HW.1, and like most upgrades, the newer version cost more. This can be likened to an iPhone 7+ costing more than an iPhone 6s.

SCREEN

Arguably the only major difference between our contending wallets. The Ledger HW.1 comes without a display screen as against the Nano S which has an OLED display screen.

However, this doesn’t make the HW.1 any less secured because the HW.1 comes with a security card which can be used to confirm transactions.

Ledger Hw.1 supports

Sadly, the Ledger HW.1 supports only Bitcoin. However, its system UI is capable of storing a wide variety of Altcoins, it’s up to the wallets programmers to incorporate them in the nearest future.

That might not be the case though, as the wallet’s production seems to have been discontinued after the Nano S was introduced. However, with more users opting for the HW.1 Ledger will have no choice but to improve the HW.1 device. That will boost its currency support as well.

CONCLUSION — LEDGER NANO S VS LEDGER HW.1

The Ledger Nano S is an upgrade to the HW.1. That, however, doesn’t make the HW.1 obsolete.

Furthermore, the Nano S can be seen as an advanced version of the HW.1, Ledger obviously created the Nano S so it can stay competitive with new generation hardware wallets like KeepKey and Trezor, who all have display screens.

The fact remains that the HW.1 is a lot more affordable than the Nano S and is an ideal hardware wallet for starters and those who cannot afford to shed the extra cash needed to buy the Nano S, Trezor or KeepKey.

Basically, both wallets provide the same level of security. The Nano S obviously has a better design, a display screen and supports more currencies.
