Ellipal Titan Review: Is This Hardware Wallet Truly Isolated?

by | Oct 25, 2019 | Hardware wallet, Wallet | 3 comments

Today, I bring you the most comprehensive review on The Ellipal Titan Cold Wallet, a fresh addition to the crypto security platform.

The wallet does not work like the regular Trezor and Ledger we are all familiar with.

Ellipal claims to be 100 percent isolated from all networks by only creating a connection with the computer or smartphone via QR codes.

Not to say that wallets with USB or Bluetooth connections do not guarantee security, but the transfer of data via QR code is the main security tool of the Ellipal.

This wallet is very exciting; it comes with a whole new package.

Continue reading I’ll let you in all you need to know about Ellipal’s cold wallet.

Post Summary

Ellipal Limited is a blockchain technology company founded in 2017 and headquartered in  Hong Kong. Its mission is to “ connect everyone safely and conveniently to the blockchain network”.

Although I found this very ironic because the Ellipal Titan is a close source device i.e it is not open for everyone to see on the blockchain network.

To help you better understand how the device works, here’s what I will be covering.

  2. Pricing and unboxing

Ellipal Titan in a Nutshell

The Ellipal titan is a completely air-gapped hardware wallet designed to isolate your private keys offline and transfer its data through QR codes.

The wallet is shaped like a regular smartphone and supports 30+ coins including all the ERC20 tokens.

Unlike Trezor and Ledger’s wallets, the Titan is quite bulky to carry about for a hardware wallet. On the other hand, you don’t necessarily need to carry it about all the time, since you’d be storing a lot of funds there.

Ellipal’s major security is the transfer of data via QR codes. It uses this method to completely isolate your keys from the network.

Unlike Trezor and Ledger, the Ellipal is not battle-tested and will require more time to be regarded as an “Elite Wallet”.

The wallet’s interface is one of the best I’ve seen so far and you will have no troubles with the setup; thanks to a swift touchscreen.

Ellipal also promises security against physical attacks through its IP65-sealed metal body and tampering detection.

Read on, and find out how you can get this wallet and the best way to use it.

Pricing and Unboxing

The Ellipal cost $139 shipping fee not included. At a $20 international shipping fee, getting this wallet will cost $159.

This is very high for a wallet that’s coming to compete with the existing big guns (the likes of Trezor and Ledger).

Pros and Con

Pros

  • Strong metal body to protect against physical attacks
  • Completely isolated from any networks.
  • Very user-friendly via a flawless touchscreen.

Con

  • Too expensive for an emerging wallet.
  • Supports Lesser Coins than its competitors
  • Quite big to carry around for an HD wallet.

Ellipal Vs Competitors

Ellipal Vs Ledger and Trezor

Although the Ellipal claims to be 100 percent secured, it’s still no match for these Ledger or Trezor wallets.

People always want to know that they are entrusting their funds in a reputable wallet provider, this is a feat Ellipal will have to gain in the future if it’s found to be trustworthy over time. Yes, Ledger and Trezor were once new wallets and were not trusted as it is now.

The Ellipal’s interface is definitely something to write home about when compared to these two.

One more thing to consider is the coin support level. Once again, the Titan falls short in this category.

Ellipal cost is more than any of Ledger or Trezor wallets.

 Ellipal  Titan Vs Bitfi Knox

These two are closely similar when it comes to physical appearance. They are very new wallets even though the Bitfi is older.

Bitfi is an open-source and does not store your private keys on the device while the Ellipal is closed source and never exposes the private keys to any network by transferring data via QR codes only.

Ellipal supports a fewer number of coins compared to Bitfi’s unlimited coin support. Truth be told, Ellipal still needs to step up its game if it plans to match the likes of Bitfi.

An Ellipal device cost more than the Bitfi which is big advantage to the competitor.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does the device work?

The Ellipal is fully air-gapped, it relies on only QR code for data transfer, and does not connect to any USB, WiFi, or Bluetooth connection.
This way it protects the device against physical attacks.
On the other hand, the only way to hack any wallet or install malware inside is to access the content inside. The wallet is designed to protect against such physical attacks, thanks to a strong metal casing. To open up the device, you will have to destroy the circuit inside.
Smart move right?

What is Air-Gapped?

Air gapped is a state where a device is fully disconnected from other devices or systems. Ellipal believes this is the maximum protection for any device against hacking.

Thank you for the review. ELLIPAL Titan currently supports 31 blockchains and all ERC 20, TRC 20, TRC 10, BEP2 and EOS tokens.

All 31 blockchains includes: BTC, XRP, ETH, XLM, USDT, LTC, DASH, EOS, ETC, DOGE, BTG, DGB, BTX, BCD, DCR, XZC, GRS, BCH, TRX, CMT, SMART, ECA, BNB, ADA, BSV, PTN, XVG, HPB, WTC, FLRN, ELA.

As ELLIPAL is not opensource, we allow users to import their own private keys which improves the security.

Security reviews will be coming out soon for ELLIPAL to be as “battle-tested” as possible.
